Northern Ontario Plant DatabaseNorthern Ontario Vegetation Type (V-type)Summary: A mixedwood stand dominated by sugar maple and yellow birch in the canopy layers and regeneration. Occasional associates in the canopy include white cedar, red maple, white spruce, while balsam fir is more common in the regeneration. The shrub layer contains mountain maple, beaked hazel, choke cherry, Canada fly honeysuckle, and ground hemlock. The herb layer contains a moderate number of forbs, plus spinulose woodfern and shining clubmoss. Rose twisted-stalk, false Solomon's seal and hairy Solomon's seal, bluebead lily, wild sarsaparilla, and starflower occur most frequently in the herb layer. This vegetation type is similar to C-V11, however, C-V10 is characterized by the presence of false Solomon's seal and hairy Solomon's seal, but lacks largeleaf aster and ground pine. Soil & Ecosite Types: The Sugar Maple-Yellow Birch-Spinulose Woodfern Vegetation Type (C-V10) occurs most commonly on fresh to very fresh, coarse loamy to silty soils (S7), but may occasionally be found on somewhat drier soil types. This vegetation type was described primarily from the northwestern portion of Site Region 4E (Site Districts 4E-2 and 4E-3). Less than 10% of sample plots occurred within Site Region 5E (undesignated site district). Like C-V11, this vegetation type can be found on ecosite types C-ES 29.2 (Sugar Maple-Yellow Birch, fresh to moist), C-ES 29.1 (Sugar Maple-Yellow Birch, dry to moderately fresh) and C-ES 35 (Lowland Hardwood, fresh to very moist). Note: In sample plots, species listed below occurred with 50% frequency or more, except for those in square brackets, which occurred with 30-49% frequency.
