Northern Ontario Plant DatabaseNorthern Ontario Vegetation Type (V-type)Summary: A hardwood stand dominated by sugar maple in all canopy and regeneration layers. White birch, basswood, and red oak occur in the overstorey, but with less frequency than sugar maple. Several hardwood species occur in the subcanopy with less frequency than sugar maple, including white birch, basswood, beech, ironwood, and white ash. Regeneration is dominated by sugar maple, basswood, ironwood, balsam fir, red ash, beech, and red oak; occurring with less frequency are hemlock and trembling aspen. The shrub layer is fairly diverse, with striped maple, Canada fly honeysuckle, and beaked hazel as the most common species. The herb layer is very diverse. Commonly encountered flowering plants include wild lily-of-the-valley, wild sarsaparilla, largeleaf aster, starflower, red trillium, hairy Solomon's seal, and large-flowered bellwort. Rose twisted-stalk, shinleaf, and broadleaf helleborine are found with less frequency. The marginal woodfern is the only fern listed as occurring regularly. Plagiomnium cuspidatum (formerly Mnium cuspidatum) is the only moss listed that grows on the forest floor. This vegetation type is similar to C-V5, but C-V4 is characterized by the presence of striped maple, red ash, and marginal woodfern, but lacks leatherwood. Soil & Ecosite Types: The Sugar Maple-Basswood-Striped Maple-Herb Rich Vegetation Type (C-V4) occurs most commonly on fresh to very fresh, coarse loamy to silty soils (S7), but may also be found on dry to moderately fresh soil types. The C-FEC manual indicates the C-V4 type may be found on calcareous soils. This vegetation type was described from the southeastern portion of Site Region 5E, primarily from Site District 5E11, with <10% of sample plots from Site District 5E10. Like C-V5, this vegetation type can be found on ecosite types C-ES 24.1 (Sugar Maple-Red Oak-Basswood, Dry to Moderately Fresh) and C-ES 24.2 (Sugar Maple-Red Oak-Basswood, Fresh to Moist). Note: In sample plots, species listed below occurred with 50% frequency or more, except for those in square brackets, which occurred with 30-49% frequency.
