Northern Ontario Plant DatabaseNorthern Ontario Vegetation Type (V-type)Summary: This hardwood dominated lowland forest type contains a moderate number of tree species, but none occurred with >50% frequency in the sample plots. Black ash is the most common species, especially in the regeneration layer, but other tree species in the overstory include trembling aspen, sugar and red maple, yellow birch, white spruce, basswood, and balsam poplar. Balsam fir and white elm appear in the subcanopy and become more common in the regeneration layer. The C-FEC manual reports associations of silver maple, green ash, and bur oak in this vegetation type, but their frequency of occurrence is less than 30%, so they were not included in the species list. The shrub layer is fairy diverse; beaked hazel, choke cherry, mountain maple, and alternateleaf dogwood are common in the tall shrub layer, with Canada fly honeysuckle, wild red raspberry, and swamp red currant common in the low shrub layer. The herb layer is dominated by dwarf raspberry, wild sarsaparilla, and spinulose woodfern, while a variety of other herbs and ferns occur with less than 50% frequency. Soil & Ecosite Types: The Black Ash-Hardwood-Herb Rich Vegetation Type (C-V7) occurs most commonly on fresh to very fresh, coarse loamy to silty soils (S7) and very moist, fine loamy to clay soils (S16), but may also be found on a variety of other soil types (undesignated). This vegetation type was described from sites scattered throughout Site Regions 4E and 5E. The C-V7 vegetation type can be found primarily on ecosite type C-ES 35 (Lowland Hardwood, Fresh to Very Moist) and rarely on ecosite type C-ES 27.1 (Sugar Maple-White Birch-Poplar-White Pine, Dry to Moderately Fresh). Note: In sample plots, species listed below occurred with 50% frequency or more, except for those in square brackets, which occurred with 30-49% frequency.
